"When I talked to the president, he was loaded."
The year was 1973. The Watergate scandal was peaking, tension between the US and the Soviets was at a boiling point, and the Arab-War had entered its fifth day. As Prime Minister of England Edward Heath tried to contact Richard Nixon for urgent consultations, Henry Kissinger and Brent Scowcroft attempted to reschedule the call the following day without letting the cat out of the bag about the monkey on his back. This moment, remeniscent of a scene from Dr. Strangelove, is one of many madcap laughs contained in the nearly 20,000-page phone transcripts recently released by the Natioinal Archive.
